The rapid growth of large language models (LLMs) demands unparalleled data transmission capabilities. Training these massive models in HPC environments requires multiple accelerators working seamlessly together. The bandwidth between these accelerators directly impacts the size of trainable LLMs. This new era of AI is driven by the bandwidth and low-latency provided by 224G PHY technology.

To support the training of increasingly sophisticated LLMs, the adoption of 224G PHY IP across the AI ecosystem is crucial. This technology must be silicon-proven on advanced processes and meticulously engineered to support 1.6Tbps systems and upcoming standards like UALink 200G. Integrating 224G PHY IP into accelerators, processors, retimers, switches, network interface cards (NICs), Data Processing Units (DPUs), and optical Digital Signal Processing (DSPs) is essential. This bulletin explores 草榴社区’ advancements in 224G PHY IP, its deployment, and its industry impact.

Pioneering 224Gbps Ethernet since 2022

In September 2022, we showcased at ECOC 2022 in Basel, Switzerland. This milestone marked the birth of a tangible 224G PHY PHY IP. Since then, we have made significant strides, demonstrating our technology at platforms such as DesignCon, the Optical Fiber Communication Conference (OFC), ECOC, and the TSMC Symposium. Our IP has become the industry's most widely interoperable 224G SerDes, supporting VSR, LR, and optical channels. For a closer look, check out the recent DesignCon 2025 interops in the video below.

Our with 224G PHY IP is remarkable, achieving several industry firsts. We announced N5 silicon success in October 2022, followed by N3E in 2023, and N3P in July 2024. Extensive interoperability testing has been conducted on our IP, ensuring seamless functionality across diverse platforms and environments.

Design and Deployment Experience: From 56G to 224G

The journey from 56G to 224G PHY IP has been marked by relentless innovation and rigorous testing, showcasing the maturity and robustness of our IP. This maturity has enabled 44 customers to successfully design and deploy high-speed Ethernet solutions.

The adoption of 224G PAM4 technology has gained significant traction, particularly among the world's largest hyperscalers. Our technology is now integrated into 12 designs ramping up production in advanced 5nm and 3nm process nodes. These designs span a range of applications, including compute and AI accelerators, NICs, optical modules, telecom processors, retimers, FPGAs, and test equipment. We continue to lead in high-speed Ethernet, enabling the next generation of data center and network infrastructure technologies.

Industry Standards and Specifications

The development of industry standards for 224G PHY IP is ongoing, with organizations like IEEE and OIF leading the way. The OIF is currently working on the 224G LR specification, while IEEE is developing the 200G electrical specification, expected to reach draft 2.0 by May 2025. These standards are crucial for ensuring compatibility and performance across different implementations of 224G PHY IP. We have been actively characterizing our IP against these evolving specs, ensuring our solutions are well-aligned with industry standards and ready for broad adoption, contact us to learn about this characterization report!

Future Outlook

As the 224G ecosystem takes shape with multiple vendors start offering DAC, ACC, AEC, NPC channels, 草榴社区 focus will continue in enabling multiple lane integration in single SoCs, addressing challenges like crosstalk, and ensuring robust performance. This is essential for applications such as fabric switches in data centers, where high-performance and reliable data transmission are paramount. Collaboration between technology providers and customers continues to drive innovation in 224G PHY IP, ensuring it meets the evolving needs of the industry.

Our 224G PHY IP solutions are being adopted across various sectors, including hyperscale data centers, baseband, remote radio units, and test equipment. This broad adoption underscores the versatility and reliability of our IP, making it a preferred choice for many leading companies. With customers in different stages of design tape-out, we continue to support their technological goals.

The massive compute demands of hyperscale data centers – a backbone of the new pervasive intelligence era – require significantly faster Ethernet speeds to enable emerging workloads of large language models, HPC simulation and AI training.  To create the industry’s fastest chips for AI and data center networking applications, 草榴社区 delivers a complete IP solution for 1.6T Ethernet.
